Book Review: My Summer Vacation by Terrance Wade by R.A. Desilets

terranceMy Summer Vacation by Terrance Wade‘ is a quick read told from the point of view of seven-year-old Terrance Wade.

I initially heard about this book over on Google+ and I saw it was her debut novel. Having just gone through the first month jitters of wondering if anybody would read my book or like it I snapped it up and read it. If I hadn’t been told it was her first book I wouldn’t have known it. This book is really well written, edited, and formatted. It looks and reads really well.

The story starts with his mom sneaking in his window to take him on an adventure to see the world… an adventure to see the world that starts with his mom sneaking him out through a window? Well, obviously, she has to. She’s a secret agent robot ninja warrior according to her son. I don’t know what his dad, her ex-husband thinks because he doesn’t want her in the house, hence the window entrance. Terrance’s adventure while being, according to the police, kidnapped by a crackpot parent is touching, exciting, and fun. I was able to fit together the other side of the story, the adult side of the story that we read through the filter, the point of view of Terrance and it made sense, was exciting, interesting, and it had an innocence that was refreshing to read.

It’s a quick read and it left me wanting more. I’d like to hear the original story that led to his mom dashing off the first time. It’s R.A. Desilets‘ debut novel and I look forward to more.
